The Coffins of Little Hope is Palmdale City Library’s Book of the Month for May
The Coffins of Little Hope by Timothy Schaffert is the Palmdale City Library’s Featured Book of the Month for May.

When a young country girl is reported to be missing, perhaps whisked away by an itinerant aerial photographer, Essie stumbles onto the story of her life. Or, perhaps it is simply a hoax, or a delusion: the child and child-thief invented from the desperate imagination of a lonely, lovelorn woman. Either way, the story of the girl reaches far and wide, igniting controversy, attracting curiosity seekers and cult worshippers from all over the country to a dying rural town.

Schaffert is the author of four novels: The Coffins of Little Hope, Devils in the Sugar Shop, The Singing and Dancing Daughters of God and The Phantom Limbs of the Rollow Sisters (the Nebraska Book Award). He teaches in the English Department at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The Coffins of Little Hope is available for check out from the Palmdale City Library.

City of Lancaster and InSite Development Unveil Start Small Incubator Program
Lancaster, CA - The City of Lancaster, together with private partner InSite Development, today unveiled the Start Small Incubator Program in downtown Lancaster. The program provides aspiring entrepreneurs with a new opportunity to launch their business ventures on The BLVD with free-standing kiosks.

“One of a kind, entrepreneurial businesses are the heart of The BLVD,” said Vice Mayor Ron Smith. “Since our revitalization efforts began, these types of businesses have flocked to our downtown. However, many aspiring business owners lack the resources needed to start a brick-and-mortar store. The Start Small program offers them an opportunity to open with significantly lower start-up costs, then gradually build their businesses until they are ready to launch a full-sized store.”

BBQ FUNDRAISER FOR FIGHTER PLANE
In honor of its namesake and the aerospace community that it serves, the William J. 'Pete' Knight Veterans Home recently acquired a F-100 Super Sabre for permanent display. The Board of Director of the East Kern Airport District voted in December of last year to donate the surplus supersonic jet fighter to the home after storing it at the Mojave Air & Space Port for several decades.

To celebrate this generous gift and raise funds to offset restoration and display costs, the home is hosting a BBQ fundraiser on May 12 from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tickets are $10 person, with children eating free, and can be purchased at the door.
