Safe and Sane Fireworks Go on Sale in Palmdale June 28th
36 Local Nonprofits to Benefit from Sales

PALMDALE, CA — Beginning June 28, dozens of nonprofit organizations across the Antelope Valley will generate vital funding by operating authorized Safe and Sane Fireworks booths in the City of Palmdale. These booths provide essential revenue for groups that deliver meaningful services to local residents.

“Purchasing fireworks from an authorized booth ensures that celebrations are fun and responsible, while supporting our local nonprofits,” said Mayor Richard J. Loa. “Families can celebrate safely knowing their purchase directly benefits our neighbors.”

Safe and Sane fireworks, which do not fly or explode and bear the State Fire Marshal’s Safe and Sane Seal, go on sale in the City at 12 p.m. on Saturday, June 28, through 12 p.m. on Saturday, July 5. Residents can locate a booth by visiting www.CityOfPalmdaleCA.gov/Fireworks.
The Palmdale City Council approved issuing permits for 36 qualifying nonprofit organizations at its June 3 meeting. To qualify, organizations must be a nonprofit serving youth, veterans, civic or charitable causes; have its primary meeting place in Palmdale or over 50% of its active members residing in incorporated Palmdale; be established in the City for at least 12 months before applying; and have a minimum of 20 active members. Only one booth is allowed per organization. Booths require an inspection by the Los Angeles County Fire Department and Palmdale Public Safety department before receiving a permit. Fireworks may be purchased by individuals 16 years and older; proof of age may be required.

Safe and Sane fireworks may only be used from 12 p.m. on June 28 12 p.m. on July 5. Using them outside of this time frame is illegal and subject to fines. City officials remind residents to only use fireworks where legal and safe.

The City of Palmdale is the only municipality in the Antelope Valley where it is legal to sell Safe and Sane fireworks and discharge them on private property. However, the Anaverde housing community, all areas south of the California Aqueduct and parts of the Rancho Vista area are in “No Fireworks Zones.” All fireworks are strictly prohibited in these locations.

“I encourage everyone to use our interactive map at www.CityOfPalmdaleCA.gov/Fireworks. It allows residents to enter their address so they can see if they live in the ‘no fireworks zone’ where even Safe and Sane fireworks are NOT allowed,” said Mayor Pro Tem Laura Bettencourt.

The City also reminds residents that there are hefty fines for individuals caught using illegal fireworks within City limits. Illegal fireworks are not allowed anywhere in Palmdale or Los Angeles County. Those who are caught using illegal fireworks in Palmdale will face a $2,500 fine for a first offense, $5,000 for a second offense and $10,000 for a third offense.

To report illegal fireworks being used now, call the Palmdale Sheriff’s Station at 661/272-2400. Residents may report where illegal fireworks are used or sold online 24/7 at www.CityOfPalmdaleCA.gov/ReportFireworks.
