City of Montebello Joins First Public Hydrogen Utility
Lancaster, CA – First Public Hydrogen (FPH2) is proud to welcome the City of Montebello as its newest member. The item will be considered by the FPH2 Board of Directors for approval at the September 18 board meeting and is therefore not yet final. The announcement marks another milestone in California’s energy leadership and highlights Montebello’s commitment to exploring practical, community-focused clean energy solutions.

Located about eight miles east of downtown Los Angeles, Montebello is a key part of the Gateway Cities and San Gabriel Valley region of Los Angeles County. With a population of over 62,000, the city has consistently prioritized smart infrastructure investment, public safety, and innovation in public services.

“Montebello’s decision to join First Public Hydrogen underscores our commitment to resilience and sustainable innovation in municipal services,” said Raul Alvarez, Montebello City Manager. “By partnering with FPH2, we’re taking meaningful steps toward integrating clean, next‑generation energy solutions that enhance public safety, build resiliency, and connect communities.”
“Montebello is a strong example of how local governments are stepping up to lead California’s clean energy transition,” said R. Rex Parris, Chairman of First Public Hydrogen. “By joining FPH2, they’re gaining access to the tools, partnerships, and technical support needed to make hydrogen a real, working part of municipal operations.”

As a member of FPH2, Montebello will be able to leverage centralized procurement and infrastructure planning to pilot hydrogen-powered technologies, such as traffic signal backup systems, emergency services support, and clean vehicle fleets, at no cost or obligation. FPH2’s Joint Powers Authority model lowers the barrier to entry for public agencies while ensuring transparency, flexibility, and long-term scalability.

FPH2 continues to welcome public institutions, transit agencies, water districts, and cities across California to explore membership as momentum grows for hydrogen-fueled public infrastructure.
